FUSING SANDS
MOPOKE
Fusing Sands / A Wearable Arts & Fashion Collaboration between Francoise Lane of IndijDesigns + Fashion Designer/Stylist Christy Van Der Heyden
Fusing Sands merged one designers desert inspired garment design with another's island inspired artwork to form unique Australian made wearable art. The name 'Fusing Sands' was inspired by two of Australia's most iconic landscapes & regions - The Red Centre / Simpson Desert and The Great Barrier Reef / Torres Strait. An overland journey shows the colour and content of the sand changing and transforming from one region to the other and back again.

Ascension Project
Ethical & Sustainable Fashion With Frequency / Luxury Adornment /
A Journey Of Creation Through Ceremony / Bold Prints / Natural Dyes / Timeless Style
The Ascension Project began with motif symbols designed to represent flight, freedom from self and the journey of nurturing the soul back to purpose through intention. The symbols informed artworks in watercolour pencil, carved woodblocks and surface pattern design translated into textile application and wearable art.
The project evolved to include a vision for a catwalk on the iconic Skywalk in Kalbarri Western Australia and progressed into a project called ‘Gutharraguda Kaju Katka (Skywalk) Textiles From The Park’ where Designer /Artist Christy Van Der Heyden took residency to collect native plants from the region to produce the natural dyes used throughout the Ascension Project collections.
Produced on Nanda Country in Kalbarri and Walyalup (Fremantle) this project also utilises the Mango Silk Collective model for harvesting plant dyes.
The dye baths take place on specific moon and planetary alignments intentionally created in ceremony to hold light codes and high frequency vibrations. Each unique piece is designed for souls who recognise and embody their true essence and honour their part in the creation story.
The project expands across the WA region from Kalbarri to the East Kimberley region where a series of photoshoots have been produced to tell a unique story of activation through intention, focussing on the healing power of women and the land.

Mopoke
MOPOKE Made In Melbourne, launched 2007/08. An ethical clothing label that began the journey for Fearlessly Passionate Wild Women and Divine Individuals...
Created after returning from living in and working in Israel. With a background in working in the fashion and costume design industry between Melbourne, Europe and UK Christy was a finalist in the 2008 L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival Fashion Exposed awards after only a few months of launching the label. MOPOKE also participated in the L’Oreal Open Studios program, Fashion Weeks in Melbourne and Sydney, pop up shops and laneway parades between Melbourne and Alice Springs and Melbourne’s Fashion@FedSquare.
With a studio in Fitzroy, Melbourne MOPOKE continued to operate whilst designer Christy relocated to Alice Springs, Central Desert of Australia where the MOPOKE personality and inspiration behind the brand of ‘the warrior who wanders confidently through the unknown of the desert’ became a reality and lived experience.
MOPOKE focused on using high quality natural fibres and was part of a growing movement of ‘Made In Melbourne’ labels choosing to operate under ethical conditions in an industry dominated by slave labour conditions and off-shore production.
MOPOKE also worked with styling performing artists and has a particular passion for working with refugee communities in the music industry and First Nations creatives through collaborations with Art Centres - something Designer Christy is ever-passionate about to this day…
Having grown up in the creative hub that is Melbourne and being inspired by the desert landscapes and camel adventures set a backdrop for the beautifully tailored and structured garments that adorn the body and honour the unique sovereignty of the individual…the warrior-ess that lives within us.
